Cathie Hamilton and Diana Arnold, both recent newcomers to New Zealand have cooked up a new tourism promotion to help extend the stay of visitors to Hawke’s Bay.

“After a talk by Hawke’s Bay Tourism about their Hidden gems campaign, – aimed at encouraging visitors to stay that extra night by doing something more here – and an activity, or experience that perhaps they hadn’t thought of before, we thought we could do our bit to encourage visitors to stay one more night” – commented Diana who owns Havelock House in Havelock North.

So many visitors rush through the region, staying only a night or two and we really need to encourage longer staying visitors. People are looking for different experiences – what better than to use what Hawke’s Bay is already famous for its fresh food and fine wines.

Hawke’s Bay local produce from olive oils to olives, cheese and nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables will be featured in Cathie’s original recipes. Guests will go away having learnt how to make simple but sophisticated dishes from scratch with time saving tips from a top chef – Cathie.

Other countries such as Italy and Thailand have been promoting their cookery for years – we have it all here it just takes a small ‘leap of faith to put it in place’

Cathie has the cooking skills – she has been running successful cookery classes in Hawke’s Bay for the past 18 months and is so impressed by the range of fresh food here – “It’s something Hawke’s Bay people don’t always appreciate – in Canada so much of this has been lost – meaning the farmers markets to parking lots!” We have the accommodation adds Diana who opened the Havelock House B&B 3 years ago after they she arrived here from York England with her family.

Guests will stay here and go to Cathie’s for the cooking class followed by dinner paired with local wines. We are hoping to appeal to visitors who want that extra night.

“Visitors love the food and wine here” adds Cathie. “So why not teach them how to use all this fresh produce and when they go home they will impress their friends with the recipes they’ve learnt on the course – and their friends will come to Hawke’s Bay too.”

We asked our members to take some time to think about McDonalds coming to Havelock North and come back to us with some constructive feedback.

The things to keep in mind were:

NZ is still a free country and we can all buy any land we want

A New Zealander can open and operate any kind of business as long as the District Plan of the area allows them to following application of Resource Consent

Employment is good we need it

McDonalds are a global company who have NEVER lost a Resource Consent application (we think anywhere in theworld) BUT there is always a first time. Note: they have been made to lessen signage etc IF that is in the local District Plan

McDonalds has cleaned up their act and are not the American ‘human & planet killers’ they have been potrayed as in the past

McDonalds keep a lot of farmers and vege growers in business

McDonalds have produced the most NZ millionaires of any business in this country – we all wish we owned one.

The owners live locally and are a nice young couple who LOVE Havelock North and are raising their children here

We asked if it was worth expending a lot of emotional energy to WANT to stop something that probably was going to happen anyway – and maybe it was better to concentrate on HOW we ensure the rest of the corporate fast food businesses can’t follow.

Here were some of their responses:

Some of the audience members were weeping with laughter and guffaws a-plenty echoed around the theatre. Many rose to their feet as the cast took their curtain calls.” The British Theatre Guide The Story… It’s about friendship. It’s about solidarity. And it’s about sex. Hesitant at first, Olive, and Peggy are egged on by Elsie that they could make a lot of money. So they take the leap and call themselves the “Telephone Belles” and that’s when the fun really begins.

Andy and Rens are without doubt two of the world’s most formidable exponents of traditional music.

Individually, their musicianship is unparalleled, and together they are a musical force to be reckoned with, both members of international super group Mozaik, they present a stunning repertoire of songs and music from a wide range of traditional backgrounds in addition to original songs penned by Irvine. They first met in the late ‘60’s and have played together ever since, when their schedules have allowed. Rens’ multi-instrumental talents appear on all of Andy’s recent recordings.

Andy and Rens toured NZ to rave reviews in 2002 and Andy last toured solo in 2007. Andy Irvine: occupies a unique place in the musical world, plying his trade as archetypal troubadour, with a solo show and travelling lifestyle that reflects his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie. Few others can equal his repertoire, Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dance tunes, and a compelling canon of his own material that defies description.

Andy has formed or played with many legendary Irish music groups including Sweeney’s Men, Planxty, De Dannan, Patrick Street, and Mozaik. He has also worked with other luminaries of Celtic music including Dick Gaughan, Paul Brady, Donal Lunny and John Doyle and has produced a number of solo albums. He continues to perform internationally with Mozaik and the reformed Patrick Street. This is the man of whom Si Kahn said, “Andy Irvine is Ireland’s Woody Guthrie, with a philosopher’s ear and a prophet’s passionate voice. He is also a stunning singer and instrumentalist who weaves melody and texture, harmony and rhythm, into a rich tapestry of present and past.” Andy returns with a new and long-awaited solo album, Abocurragh, released late in 2010.

Rens van der Zalm: is a musician of multiple talents: equally accomplished on guitar, violin, mandolin, accordion and whistle. Rens’ instrumental skills are complimented by his ability to apply his expertise to a wide variety of musical styles, covering a wide range of repertoire from folk, to jazz to classical. In recent years his brilliant instrumental skills and flair have seen Rens in high demand in theatre circles both in Europe and recently in Australia. In 2009 he performed alongside Mark Seymour (of Hunters and Collectors) playing a myriad of instruments in the very well received stage production of One Night The Moon, a play adapted from the 2001 film of the same name, with music by Kev Carmody, Paul Kelly and Mairead Hannan. Rens will also be working on numerous artistic projects with Seymour in 2011.

Tickets $30.00
